What Illusions Are Slowing You Down?
Discovering the truth of who you were created to be
- something that deceives by producing a false or misleading impression of reality.
- the state or condition of being deceived; misapprehension.
- an instance of being deceived.
- Psychology: a perception, as of visual stimuli (optical illusion) that represents what is perceived in a way different from the way it is in reality.
–The English Dictionary
The “optical” in optical illusions is a bit deceiving. It seems to me that mental illusions would be more appropriate. Although it’s your eye’s job to receive outside images, it is your brain’s job to make sense out of what your eyes are seeing. Science has now proven that our brains, much like computers, operate from stored memory.
Did you know?
If you and I stood in the exact same spot, looking at the exact same tree, we would each see a different picture. Everything that you and I see is based on our own personal experiences. Stored memories, events and their outcomes, these are the things that determine what we are personally seeing. As our eyes take in an image, our brain compares it to past experiences and uses that stored data to compute and understand what is in front of us. Because no two people have identical memories, each of us has our own version of “reality”.
This knowledge becomes even more powerful as you begin to understand that there is more than what we see and hear controlling our perceptions and realities…
Check back next month when we’ll discuss what’s really behind your brain’s “reality”. Until then, keep your eyes AND mind open. See you soon!
